The Sparrow and the Fall is the musical collaboration of performing songwriter Ryan McCarthy and upright bassist/vocalist Patty McCarthy.  This Denver-based married duo makes piano-driven indie folk-pop music that is inspired by their faith, family, and everyday experiences.  Their thoughtful songwriting and tight vocal harmonies create engaging music that ponders the joy, mystery and heartbreak we all experience in the journey of life.

Rooted in the tradition of artists such as Joan Baez and Paul Simon, but also inclusive of more modern influences like Ben Folds, Gillian Welch and Elliott Smith, The Sparrow and the Fall infuses their music with hope, humor and honesty about where they are and where they are headed, fueled by the conviction that the more we get to know each other’s stories, the less alone we will feel.

The couple met and married in college, Ryan hailing from the Rocky Mountain foothills west of Denver and Patty from the scenic wine country of northern California, each having grown up playing and singing in school and church groups.  It was while raising their five children and pursuing various musical opportunities that Ryan and Patty began to realize something special was happening every time they sang Ryan's songs together in harmony. They heeded the call, took the plunge and began recording and performing original music together as a duo.

Their first EP, You Don’t Have To, came in 2012.  This self-produced collection includes fan favorites “Good Kids” and “All Undone.”  In 2015 Ryan won the GMA Immerse Artist-Writer competition in Nashville and the couple began working on their next set of songs which came in 2017’s Close At Hand.  This EP, their most current release, explores the theme of hope in the midst of darkness.

The band’s name is inspired by a passage in the Bible where Jesus says, “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”

Their music has been featured on Noisetrade’s New and Notable and the Colorado Playlist and they are artist members of the Anselm Society Arts Guild.  They are now performing regionally and working on their first full-length album (due out in 2019).
